MICYCLE- An Introspection in to new bicycle design.
This project highlights changing attitude of the people towards bicycle, their buying preferences and enhanced needs and desire.
Project is also an effort to establish parameters for bicycle design, which will satisfy consumer’s need, and at the same time, instill proud of ownership among its user.
Project highlights the people’s perception towards eco- friendly transportation and growing need of a bicycle as a healthy and environment friendly mode of transport.
Design objective was to engage and inspire people with emotive qualities of the product, but remain fairly minimal. Approach was also to not fall in any style category and rather define new category of frame geometry.
SYSTEM'S APPROACH TO FIND AREAS OF INTERVENTION
Approaches to analyse the information varies depending upon purpose and magnitude of the problem. There are mostly 2 approaches, analytical and systematic. The analytical approach seeks to reduce a system to its elementary elements in order to study in details and understand the type of interactions that exist in between them. while systematic approach consider it in its totality, Proposed Systems model has been arrived by using both the methods in identifying interconnected issues. Initially 3 major system [ manufacturer, dealer and consumer ] has been studied separately and finally they are interlinked to study the overall pattern.
Concept : SHRINK TO STRETCH
Proposed concept is arrived with deep insights and it is a departure from the existing bicycles as it remains in the shrinking/folding condition unless people wants to ride. it means extreme space utilisation and at the sometime unique product identity.
It represents a bicycle metamorphosis, a formal transformation for functionality relevant purpose. It is interactive, playful and at the same time can be stored and spotted easily. This bicycle is extremely individualised and instills the feeling of joy, proud and attachment among the user. It is not just any bicycle it is ‘Micycle’.
Design Character: Transformation
Design character of transformation is evolved from the concept It is extremely practical and functional. It creates dynamism with its formal geometry. Shrinking operation is easy to operate and it reduces around 30 percent of the footprint area. While shrinking the bicycle, frame grips the tyre and hold it straight. As bicycle wheel remains completely straight, it occupies even less space than existing bicycles wherein wheel tends to rotate at an angle.
STRUCTURE
Frame constitutes two distinct members. One supports the front wheel and other support backwheel. These two members are joined with a hinge. Movement of hinge is trapped by a spring loaded pin at specified point. Movable joint is further stiffened by using a quick release lever.
Formal details of quick release lever and hinge mechanism are clearly integrated with the overall bicycle geometry. The process of shrinking also creates a new form and a new functional language of the bicycle.
CUSTOMISATION
As the more sense we engage the stronger the product experience. efforts were there to provide different textures pallette. specially in the form of stamped bicycle and perforation in the plastic panels. these proportions are blocked by plastic plugs to further customised the bike.
Perforations gives many possibilities to
customise the bike. User can generate
patterns, write word/alphabets by
attaching or detaching plastic plugs
ERGONOMICS
Setting up the most efficient and comfortable riding position can involve a series of interrelated measurements. If one setting changes bike should have flexibility to alter essential settings. Proposed concept of the bike is having a handle bar which can be rotated at any angle to suit the rider’s body geometry.
Saddle position can be altered vertically or horizontally to suit preferences.
